Can I fit carpet myself?
How do I measure my floor myself?
Good news—yes, you can fit a carpet yourself! With the right tools (knee kicker, bolster, sharp knife, hammer, carpet grippers, underlay) and a bit of patience, DIY carpet fitting is absolutely doable. For step-by-step help, check out our full blog post guide titled “How to Fit a Carpet Yourself.”
To measure your floor for carpet, all you need is a tape measure. Start by measuring the widest points of both the length and width of the room, making sure to include any alcoves and doorways. Add at least 10cm to each measurement to allow for trimming and fitting. check out our full blog post guide titled “How to measure carpet yourself"
Do You need underlay for carpet?
No but yes! Underlay for carpet adds comfort and insulation, making it feel cosier underfoot and helping it last longer. Unless your carpet has a felt backing and the subfloor is in perfect condition, underlay is recommended. Kovi Carpets & Flooring always recommends underlay for the best results.
How long does carpet fitting take? Carpet fitting time depends on factors like room size, how much furniture needs moving, any prep work (like removing old carpet), and carpet type. That means carpet installation duration can range from about 45 minutes for a small room to a few days for bigger projects.

FAQs
What areas do you cover for carpet fitting?
We provide carpet fitting services throughout York, Harrogate, Thirsk, Malton, Market Weighton and the surrounding areas. As a locally based flooring company in Clifton Moor York, we proudly serve these communities across the Yorkshire region. If you’re unsure whether we cover your location, just ask – chances are we do, as we aim to accommodate customers in all nearby towns and villages. This local focus means we can offer prompt, reliable service to homes and businesses in our area.
Do you offer carpet fitting for commercial properties?
Yes. While we specialise in domestic (residential) carpet installations, we also handle commercial carpet fitting projects for businesses and organisations. Our team has experience installing durable carpeting in offices, shops and other commercial spaces in the York area. We understand the different requirements of commercial jobs – from heavy-duty carpet tiles for high-traffic areas for safety and scheduling needs – and can deliver professional results for both homes and businesses. Whether you need cozy new carpets for your living room or robust office carpeting for your company, we have you covered.
How should I prepare my room for carpet fitting?
To ensure a smooth installation, you can take a few simple steps to get your space ready before the carpet fitters arrive :
Clear out smaller items and breakables: Remove any small furniture, decor, and personal items from the room. The more open the area, the easier it is for our fitters to work. (Don’t worry – if you need help with very heavy furniture, let us know in advance. Our team can assist with moving larger pieces by arrangement.)
Remove old flooring if agreed: If you’re handling the old carpet removal yourself, be sure to pull it up and also take out the old underlay & grippers beforehand . (If not, our team can uplift your old carpet as part of our addinal services – see the next FAQ.) It’s best to replace the underlay rather than reusing an old one, since worn-out underlay won’t support your new carpet well & may void carpet warranties.
Clean the subfloor: Give the floor a quick vacuum or sweep after removing the old carpet. Clearing any dust and debris ensures we have a clean surface to work on for the best adhesion and fit.
Ensure access and safety: Make sure the installers can easily access the room on the day (for example, keep the driveway or entry clear for our van). It’s also wise to keep pets and children away from the work area during the fitting for everyone’s safety .
By preparing in this way, you’ll help the carpet fitting go as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you have any special concerns (like a large wardrobe that can’t be moved, or limited access to your property), just let us know in advance – we’re here to help and can usually work out a solution.
- Remove old flooring if you’ve arranged to do so. If not, our team can take care of pulling up your old carpet or flooring for a small addinal fee.
- Give the area a quick clean. It helps to vacuum or sweep up any dust and debris so we have a clean surface to work on.
- Ensure access and safety. Make sure we can access the room easily (for example, keep driveways or entrances clear for our van).
It’s also a good idea to keep pets and children away from the work area on installation day for everyone’s safety.
Following these tips will help the installation go smoothly and as quickly as possible. If you have any special concerns or requests, just let us know beforehand – we’re here to help.
Will you remove my old carpet and underlay?
Absolutely. As part of an addinal service we can uplift and remove your old carpet (along with the underlay & grippers) and dispose of it responsibly. This saves you the hassle of dealing with the old flooring. Carpet removal and disposal is an add-on service, there's a small additional fee for this, which we will include in your quotation.
We highly recommend using new underlay when installing new carpet – a fresh underlay not only makes your carpet feel softer and warmer, but it can extend the life of your carpet by up to 40% by ensuring the carpet wears evenly and sits properly. (Old underlay is usually discarded because it’s often worn out and less effective by the time you replace your carpet.) Rest assured, we can take care of removing the old materials and supplying new underlay so your room is all set for a quality installation.
Can you fit a carpet I purchased from another supplier?
Yes, we offer a fitting-only service, if you already have your own carpet. In fact, whether you bought the carpet from us or elsewhere, our professional installers can still expertly fit it for you. We’re happy to provide professional carpet fitting in Yorkshire on a standalone basis, ensuring your carpet is installed with the same care and high standards we apply to our own supplies. Just make sure the carpet is suitable for your space (quality and size-wise) and have any necessary accessories on hand. If you haven’t already arranged underlay, gripper rods or door plates/thresholds, we can supply those materials and install them as needed as part of the fitting service. Our goal is to make the installation convenient for you – you get the carpet you want, and we’ll handle the rest with professional expertise for a flawless finish.
Is underlay required for new carpet installations, and do you provide it?
Absolutely. Underlay is highly recommended (and usually necessary) for any new carpet installation because it offers many benefits: it adds underfoot comfort, improves insulation and soundproofing, and significantly extends the life of your carpet. We have a wide range of quality underlays to suit every floor. A good underlay provides a stable, cushioned foundation for the carpet, which helps your carpet look and feel better and prevents premature wear. Skipping underlay is not advised – without it, the carpet would flatten and wear out much faster and wouldn’t feel as comfortable or warm.
Do you offer same day fitting?
Yes, we do offer same-day carpet fitting service, subject to availability.
We understand that sometimes you need carpet fitted urgently - whether it's for an unexpected situation, last-minute property completion, or simply because you're excited to transform your space right away!
Our experienced fitting team works efficiently to accommodate urgent requests whenever possible.
The best way to secure same-day fitting is to call us as early in the day as possible.
For same-day service, please call us directly on 01904 373 095
We'll check our schedule immediately and do our best to get your carpet fitted today. Even if we're fully booked, we may be able to arrange next-day or priority fitting to meet your urgent needs.
Please note: Same-day fitting depends on:
- Current bookings and fitter availability
- The size and complexity of your job
- Having your carpet, underlay & any required consumables ready for installation
Don't hesitate to call - we pride ourselves on being flexible and helping customers in urgent situations whenever we can!
Do you charge extra for stairs?
Our standard stair carpet fitting starts from £120, which includes the stairs, hallway, and landing as one complete job. This is our minimum charge for any stair installation, so in that sense, stairs aren't charged as an "extra" on top of room fitting - they're priced as a complete service.
However, we do charge additional fees for special stair features:
Winder & kite stairs (the triangular steps on turns/ kite steps): £3 per step
Bullnose steps (curved steps): £5 per step
Half landings: £5 each
So while basic straight stairs are included in our £120 starting price, any special features are charged separately to ensure fair, transparent pricing based on the complexity of your staircase.
For example, a straight staircase with hallway and landing would start from £120, but a staircase with 3 winders and a half landing would be £134 (£120 + £9 for winders + £5 for half landing).
We're always happy to provide a free quote after assessing your specific staircase configuration.
